Planted Parenthood: Women, Medicine, & Gynecology in Ancient Greece & Italy
Tuesday, April 8, 2025, 6pm, Minocqua Brewing Company, Madison, WI
The challenges that women face in healthcare today are unfortunately nothing new. Gynecological evidence in ancient Greece is dominated by male perspectives and misinformation, despite the central role that women played and knowledge they possessed. Many ancient gynecological remedies were plant based, often involving fruits, which also show up in ancient Greek sanctuaries as offerings to deities. This talk will discuss ancient medicine and healthcare broadly, emphasizing ancient Greek gynecology. Andrea Samz-Pustol of Indy Andy Travels presents her dissertation research on women, medicine, plants, and religion in ancient Greece, and will share tales from her archaeological research in Greece and Italy.
